Semmes Murphey Resident Recognized with National Cerebrovascular Research Award

Dr Kaan Yagmurlu Semmes Murphey Resident Recognized with National Cerebrovascular Research Award 1

Semmes Murphey Clinic is proud to recognize neurosurgery resident Dr. Kaan Yagmurlu for receiving the Robert J. Dempsey, MD Cerebrovascular Research Award, presented by the AANS/CNS Section on Cerebrovascular Surgery.

Dr. Yagmurlu’s study, “An Ex-Vivo Human Model of Endothelial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury Using Superficial Temporal Artery Harvest,” was selected as a winning submission by the review committee.

This research focuses on understanding how blood vessels respond to ischemia and reperfusion, a process that plays a critical role in conditions such as stroke and other cerebrovascular events. Advancing this understanding is essential to improving outcomes and developing more effective treatment strategies.

As part of the award, funding has been granted to support continued research, with opportunities to present this work at future cerebrovascular meetings.

Dr. Yagmurlu’s recognition reflects the strength of the academic and clinical training environment at Semmes Murphey and the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. It also highlights the importance of research in shaping the future of neurosurgical care.

We are proud to support residents who are not only developing as clinicians but also contributing to the broader field through meaningful research.
