NextGen Neuro Opens Doors for High School Students at Semmes Murphey

NextGen Neuro Opens Doors for High School Students at Semmes Murphey

We believe the future of healthcare starts with exposure, mentorship, and opportunity. That belief came to life during our first-ever NextGen Neuro High School Shadow Day, where we welcomed 10 high school students from three schools into our clinic for an immersive day in neurospecialty care.

This pilot program gave students a firsthand look at the day-to-day work of healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines. Throughout the day, students shadowed physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and physical therapists to better understand the collaborative nature of patient care within a specialty clinic environment.

In addition to observing clinical care, students participated in a Lunch & Learn discussion with providers from across our organization. These conversations offered honest insight into the educational paths, personal sacrifices, and rewarding experiences that come with careers in healthcare. Providers shared not only what it takes to succeed in medicine, but also the importance of resilience, adaptability, and curiosity along the journey.

One of the most impactful lessons students heard throughout the day was to keep an open mind about their future. Our providers encouraged them to explore opportunities they might not initially consider, to be brave enough to change direction when needed, and to remain confident even in the face of setbacks and challenges.

Students also learned about the advantages of practicing in a multidisciplinary clinic like Semmes Murphey, where providers across subspecialties work together under one roof. This collaborative structure strengthens provider expertise and expands the level of care patients can access in one place.

The goal of NextGen Neuro is simple: introduce future healthcare professionals to the possibilities within neuroscience and specialty medicine early in their educational journey. By providing real-world exposure and mentorship, we hope to broaden students’ perspectives on who they can become and the impact they can make in healthcare.

As interest in the program grows, we are already looking toward the future. For this first event, students were selected through partnerships with local school administrators. Long term, we plan to launch an application portal through our website so students from any high school can apply for future shadow days and educational opportunities. Different events may highlight different specialties, departments, and healthcare career paths as the program continues to expand.
We are proud to invest in the next generation of healthcare leaders and grateful to the students, educators, and providers who helped make this inaugural program a success.
