Dr. Bertorini was born in Lima, Peru, where he graduated from the San Fernando School of Medicine in 1970. He began his career at the Hospital del Empleado in Lima before relocating to Baltimore, Maryland, completing an internship at Union Memorial Hospital in 1972. He then completed his neurology residency at Georgetown University, where he also served a rotation in neuropathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology. In 1975, he became a fellow in neuromuscular disorders, muscle histochemistry, and electromyography at the National Institutes of Health.
Dr. Bertorini has been in Memphis since 1977 when he joined the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center (UTHSC) as an associate professor of neurology and pathology, and in 1997 he was promoted to professor. He now serves as the director of the Clinical Neurophysiology Fellowship at UTHSC
