Innovation in Spine Surgery: Semmes Murphey Introduces Advanced Navigation Technology
Tennessee's first procedure using Medtronic's Stealth AXiS™ Surgical System at an outpatient surgery center was recently performed at The Semmes Murphey Surgery Center, reflecting the organization's continued commitment to innovation and exceptional spine care.
Recently, Dr. Jock Lillard performed Tennessee's first procedure using Medtronic's Stealth AXiS™ Surgical System at an outpatient surgery center. According to Medtronic, the procedure also marked one of the earliest uses of the technology in an outpatient surgery center in the United States. For Semmes Murphey, the milestone represents more than the adoption of new technology. It reflects a continued commitment to investing in the people, programs, and resources needed to provide exceptional spine care for the communities we serve.
Stealth AXiS is an advanced navigation platform used during spine surgery. The system provides surgeons with enhanced visualization and real-time guidance during procedures, supporting surgical planning and helping physicians navigate complex spinal anatomy.
Advanced navigation technology may be used during spinal fusion procedures performed to treat a variety of spine conditions. For patients experiencing chronic back or leg pain caused by instability in the spine, worn discs, or vertebrae that have shifted out of position, surgery may be one of several treatment options considered after a comprehensive evaluation.
Dr. Lillard utilized the system during a transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF), a procedure that may be recommended for certain patients experiencing chronic back or leg pain caused by spinal instability or degeneration.
"When a patient places their trust in us, we want to know we've done everything possible to provide the highest level of care," said Dr. Lillard. "Innovation has always been part of Semmes Murphey's culture, and investing in advanced technology is one of the ways we continue to build on that commitment to our patients."
"Back and neck problems affect millions of people every year, and most of us will experience some form of spine pain during our lifetime," said John Lewis, CEO of Semmes Murphey. "As a leader in spine care, we have a responsibility to continue investing in the people, facilities, and technology that help us serve our community. This milestone reflects our commitment to ensuring patients throughout the Mid-South have access to exceptional care close to home."
For more than 100 years, Semmes Murphey has helped shape the field of neuroscience through patient care, physician education, research, and innovation. Today, Semmes Murphey physicians continue to teach, lecture, and collaborate with colleagues around the world. They also provide exceptional care to patients from across the Mid-South and throughout the United States. The implementation of advanced technologies such as Stealth AXiS reflects the clinic's ongoing commitment to advancing spine care and bringing world-class treatment options to the patients and communities it serves.
