Dr. Nickalus Khan Named Program Director for UTHSC Department of Neurosurgery
Semmes Murphey Clinic is proud to congratulate Dr. Nickalus Khan on his appointment as Program Director for the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. This leadership role reflects his longstanding commitment to academic neurosurgery, resident education, and the advancement of cranial care.
A Memphis native, Dr. Khan specializes in cerebrovascular and skull base surgery, with a clinical and academic focus on complex cranial vascular pathology, microsurgical anatomy, and advanced skull base techniques. His work combines high-level surgical expertise with a deep investment in training the next generation of neurosurgeons.
Dr. Khan is nationally recognized for his academic productivity, having authored more than 160 peer-reviewed publications. He is also a frequently invited speaker at major neurosurgical meetings, where he contributes to ongoing discussions that shape standards in complex cranial surgery.
His leadership extends beyond the operating room. Dr. Khan currently serves as Scientific Chair of the North American Skull Base Society (NASBS), a role that highlights his influence within the specialty and his dedication to advancing education, research, and collaboration across institutions.
As Program Director, Dr. Khan will focus on building a high-performing academic training environment that integrates clinical excellence, research productivity, and surgical education. His vision includes strengthening resident mentorship, expanding exposure to advanced cerebrovascular and skull base techniques, and continuing to elevate the national profile of the training program.
