Arm Pain isn't Always Coming from Your Arm
Pain, numbness, tingling, or burning that travels from your shoulder down to your fingers is often assumed to be an arm problem. In many cases, however, these symptoms actually begin in the neck.
Your arm pain could be coming from your neck.
Compressed nerves in the cervical spine, herniated discs, carpal tunnel syndrome, and other nerve conditions can all cause similar symptoms in the arm and hand. Because these conditions can feel alike, identifying the true source of the pain requires a thorough evaluation.
A detailed medical history, a focused neurological and musculoskeletal exam, and imaging when appropriate help pinpoint where the nerve irritation is occurring. This allows treatment to be tailored to the underlying cause rather than just the location of the pain.
You should consider being evaluated by a spine specialist if your arm pain:
- lasts more than a few days
- keeps coming back
- includes numbness, tingling, or weakness
- is not improving with over-the-counter medication
Early evaluation is important.
Ongoing nerve compression can lead to worsening pain, loss of strength, and long-term nerve damage if left untreated. With an accurate diagnosis, many patients improve with targeted non-surgical treatment, while others may benefit from additional interventions designed to relieve pressure on the affected nerve.
If you are experiencing persistent or progressive arm symptoms, an evaluation can help determine the cause and guide your next steps toward recovery.
