Semmes Murphey's Dr. Foley Receives International Acclaim: 2023 WFNS Scoville Award

Semmes Murphey Clinic is delighted to announce and celebrate the outstanding achievement of our very own Dr. Foley, Chairman of the Board and esteemed neurosurgeon, for being awarded the prestigious 2023 World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies (WFNS) Scoville Award. This remarkable recognition reflects Dr. Foley's exceptional contributions to advancing the art and science of neurosurgery.

The WFNS bestowed the Scoville Award upon Dr. Foley during the 18th WFNS World Congress of Neurosurgery, held from Dec 4-8 in Cape Town, South Africa. This esteemed award is reserved for neurosurgeons who have demonstrated instrumental advancements in the field, and Dr. Foley's achievements truly exemplify this criterion.

A Distinguished Career: Dr. Foley's Roles and Achievements

Dr. Foley holds key roles in the medical community, serving as a Professor in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopedic Surgery & Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, USA. Additionally, he is the Chairman of Semmes Murphey Clinic and the Chairman of the Board and Medical Director for the Medical Education & Research Institute.

His illustrious career began with his Doctor of Medicine degree from UCLA in 1979, where he was elected to membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. Following this, he completed a neurosurgery residency at UCLA in 1985 and subsequently served in various roles in the United States Army Medical Corps.

During his military service, Dr. Foley attained the rank of lieutenant colonel and received several commendations, including the Army Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, the Order of Military Medical Merit, and the Surgeon General's Physician Recognition Award.

In 1992, Dr. Foley joined Semmes Murphey Clinic and the Department of Neurosurgery at UTHSC, Memphis, where he has been actively involved in research and practice.

Dr. Foley's prolific career includes over 200 scientific publications, participation in more than 600 scientific meetings and educational workshops, and recognition with over 180 U.S. patents – more than any neurosurgeon, past or present.

In 2019, in acknowledgment of his outstanding contributions, Dr. Foley was honored with the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS) Cushing Award for Technical Excellence and Innovation in Neurosurgery.

The WFNS Scoville Award, created in 1993 in memory of the inventive neurosurgeon Dr. William Beecher Scoville, is presented to individuals who have notably advanced the art and science of neurosurgery and contributed to global communications among neurosurgeons.
