Joseph Scott Hudson
Dr. Joseph Scott Hudson is a neurosurgeon at Semmes Murphey Clinic specializing in complex, minimally invasive, and deformity spine surgery. Fellowship-trained through both AO Spine- and CAST-accredited programs, he provides advanced surgical care for a wide range of spinal disorders, traumatic brain and spine injuries, and sports-related neurosurgical conditions, including the care of elite athletes. He is committed to delivering individualized treatment that helps patients restore function, relieve pain, and return to the activities they enjoy.
Dr. Hudson earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Iowa, graduating with honors in biology, a minor in chemistry, and high distinction. He then earned his medical degree with research distinction from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine before completing his neurological surgery residency at the University of Pittsburgh.
Throughout his education and training, Dr. Hudson developed a strong interest in both clinical innovation and scientific research. His early research in cerebrovascular neurosurgery focused on intracranial aneurysm biology, medical device development, and neurovascular imaging. As a medical student, he received research support from the Neurosurgery Research and Education Foundation (NREF) and earned the 2016 NREF Best Medical Student Abstract Award. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national neurosurgical meetings and is an elected member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hudson has a strong interest in clinical spine research and medical device innovation. He is the founder of BioForce Spine LLC, a University of Pittsburgh startup focused on developing nanoscale osteoinductive coatings for titanium spinal implants.
Originally from Waterloo, Iowa, Dr. Hudson was raised in both Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Plankstadt, Germany. Outside of medicine, he enjoys spending time with family and friends, golfing, professional and collegiate sports, snow skiing, travel, and water sports.
