Transforaminal Epidural Steroid Injection / Selective Nerve Root Block

Sometimes pain is caused by a specific nerve that is being irritated. Often it’s beneficial to do a nerve block on just that nerve to help reduce pain and also confirm that this is where the problem is coming from. It also helps surgeons determine where they need to perform an operation. An injection that is specific to one (or sometimes two) specific nerves is called a transforaminal or selective nerve root block. X-ray is used to guide the needle to the correct spot in the spine so that medication can target the needed area.
