Susan R. McChesney, PhD, ABPP/AACN

Susan McChesney Atkins, Ph.D. is board certified in clinical neuropsychology through the American Board of Professional Psychology/American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology (ABPP/AACN) who has provided neuropsychological services at Semmes Murphey Neurologic and Spine Institute since 1993. She earned her Master of Education and Specialist in Education degrees in educational psychology from the University of Georgia. She spent eight years working as a school psychologist in Georgia and South Carolina during which time she developed an interest in the educational and psychological needs of children with serious medical conditions. Dr. McChesney went on to earn her doctorate degree in school psychology from the University of South Carolina where she had a clinical assistantship in the Developmental Pediatrics Department of the USC medical school. There she was part of a team that conducted multidisciplinary evaluations of children with medically-based learning challenges. Her educational and professional experience provided a strong foundation for specialty training in child neuropsychology. After completing her internship in psychology at the University of Tennessee, she remained in Memphis to complete an accredited two-year postdoctoral fellowship in child neuropsychology which she completed at Semmes Murphey Clinic.

Dr. McChesney has over thirty years of experience evaluating children and young adults with developmental and psychological disorders, such as attention disorders, autistic spectrum disorders, intellectual disability, language disorders, learning disabilities, and emotional/behavioral problems. In addition, she has over twenty years of experience in neuropsychological assessment of children and young adults with congenital neurologic conditions, chromosomal and genetic disorders, epilepsy/seizure disorders, movement disorders, traumatic brain injury and neuropsychiatric disorders such as obsessive-compulsive disorder and bipolar disorder. She has expertise in epilepsy and conducts Wada testing for patients who are candidates for neurosurgical treatment of epilepsy. In addition, she provides consultation to parents and educators to help children with special needs maximize their learning. In addition to providing neuropsychological evaluations, she conducts psychoeducational evaluations and testing for students who are seeking accommodations for high-stakes tests (e.g. SAT, ACT, LSAT, MCAT). She is experienced as well in conducting independent neuropsychological evaluations for legal purposes and has been procured as consultant and expert witness many times in medical-legal cases. She limits her practice to children and young adults, with the exception of seeing older patients with epilepsy or traumatic brain injury. Dr. McChesney is on the adjunct faculty of the counseling psychology department at the University of Memphis and she is actively involved in training and supervision of graduate students, interns, and post doctoral fellows from the University of Memphis, Memphis Veterans’ Administration Medical Center, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

In addition to being board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology/American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, she recently took the written exam for the newly created AACN subspecialty board certification in pediatric neuropsychology. She expects to complete her board certification in pediatric neuropsychology in 2015.
